I’ve read the original article in Ukrainian. It holds a mirror to what goes on in between Yalta European Strategy annual gatherings: L'Union européenne often treats "non-Forbes" Ukrainians as subhumans.
Thank you all for your feedback! I really appreciate it. I’ll be vacationing out of town for a few weeks and will reunite with you as soon as I get back online:)
"For a group of youngsters from Ukraine, winning the Europe/Middle East/Africa regional title to advance to the 27th Junior League World Series in Taylor was the easy part.
Joy turned to dismay when representatives of the Kirovograd team, which won the title in mid-July, tried to get visas. They were told it was too late to get the required interview at the U.S. embassy in Kiev, more than 200 miles away.
But, finally, the team was granted an emergency interview Thursday. The process was expensive -- reportedly $100 per player and coach in an area where the monthly income average is said to be $270 -- and cumbersome (each player had to be accompanied by both parents).
But the visas were granted ..." http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070811/SPORTS18/708110364
The U.S. Embassy must have learned from the French episode.
The scene of these poor kids singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” in front of the Embassy would have been all too embarassing. Too bad “the land of the free” gives the likes of Pinchuk priority over other Ukrainians, even if they have no intention of outstaying their welcome.
