Tymo on Partnering with the Party of Regions

The hottest question during Tymoshenko’s recent visit to Brussels came from the Russian section of EuroNews. Initially, taken out of context, her answer stirred quite a commotion back home. This fragment was shown yesterday on Savik Shuster’s Svoboda talk show.

Interviewer: Can we imagine a situation in Ukraine when, under certain circumstances, we have a coalition that brings together, say, the Party of Regions and the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko?

PM Tymoshenko: Yes, we can, but on our team’s terms, that is, based on a set of 20 points to bring the economy and politics out of the shadow. If the Party of Regions is ready for that, welcome, as they say. Let them come. But judging by the recent acts they committed while in power, such transparent house rules, unfortunately, can be readily embraced neither by monopolized clan-based businesses nor by politicians. But we do build our cooperation with the Party of Regions, but this cooperation fits European standards and norms. There is government, and there is opposition.

Contingency voting alliances require little sunshine to ferment. In fact, like mushrooms, they thrive in the shadow. And no coalition can force BYuT, NUNS, and the PRU to vote against their best interests. (Take the Cabinet Bill.)

These Big Three make up a love-and-hate triangle in which they exchange barbs and keep themselves prepared to change angles.
