Hate at Hoverla
Ukrainian National Emblem Vandalized by ‘Eurasian’ Extremists

At the top of Mt. Hoverla, Ukraine’s highest peak and President Yushchenko’s favorite mountaineering range, members of the Eurasian Youth Union have trashed the Ukrainian coat of arms, the trident, and its accompanying stone engravings.

Pictures of the trident being sawed off (the trident used to crown Hoverla) appeared online on Friday. The Eurasian Youth Union (known by its Russian acronym as ESM) claimed responsibility for the incident. The ESM is a cadet wing of the Eurasia Party, helmed by neo-imperial ideologist Aleksandr Dugin.

A statement issued by the Eurasians contains threats of more “preventive action” in the event of Tymoshenko’s premiership, Ukrayinska Pravda reports. It also reports that the SBU has identified three suspects, two of them nationals of the Russian Federation. The SBU has determined that the trident was dismantled, not sawed off, as simulated in the video below. (Perhaps the saw wasn't up to the task.)

The SBU claims to have gathered evidence that this act of vandalism was masterminded and coordinated by ESM leader Pavel Zarifullin and by his boss Aleksandr Dugin. More on ESM activities in Ukraine:

Commenting on the episode, Dugin revels in Slavic folklore and couches his rhetoric in a self-styled struggle between good and evil:

What happened at Hoverla was a castration of Ukrainian orangism. It was a symbolic castration of Yushchenko. Now what’s left is to get to Tymoshenko. But, because this surgery is not applicable to her, she, like a witch, has to be burned.

Bingo. As in the case of Kashchei, to defeat the orange serpent, it’s necessary to find an egg that’s in the woods, hanging on a tree branch, inside of which is a needle that has to be broken. That they sawed off the lousy neo-Nazi trident — that, I believe, was the breaking of the needle of Kashchei.

It’s necessary to demonstrate to the whole world the beastly, absolutely anti-people, anti-national neo-Nazi mug of the orange regime.

They already gave it a try once. For that, a Yushchenko adviser was deported from St. Petersburg. We’ve seen that Russia does not sell her own kind. Putin’s Russia does not sell her own kind.

Statement of the Eurasian Youth Union (translated from Russian):

The forces of a special mountain ESM unit at Mt. Hoverla have sawed off and desecrated the symbol of Ukraine’s occupation, the trident. Destroyed is the granite plate of the Ukrainian sectarian church. Shattered is the granite landmark devoted to the so-called Constitution of Ukraine.

In place of the Ukrainian collaborators’ blue-white banner, erected on top of the mountain is the flag of the Eurasian Youth Union.

Mt. Hoverla is hereby renamed to Stalin Peak.

With this unprecedented act of Eurasian enthusiasm, the ESM proclaims that the days of the so-called “independent Ukraine” are coming to an end. In place of the ugly limitrophe entity, we will build a Great Ukraine, as part of the Eurasian Empire.

Also, the ESM warns that in the event of orange ape Yulia Tymoshenko’s appointment to the post of Premier of the so-called Ukraine, we will not be able to stop our Ukrainian activists from taking preventive action of direct effect against the leadership of this pseudo-country.

Holodomor Exhibit in Moscow Vandalized by ESM Extremists

These days, Ukraine mourns the victims of the tragedy at the Zasyadka Mine and remembers the victims of the Holodomor.

More mayhem from the ESM came on Nov. 17, when ESM extremists vandalized the Holodomor exhibit at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Moscow. Three vandals received 10-day sentences. Others managed to escape. Watch the “Last Tour of the Holodomor” video from the ESM website.

Before the extremists set about their business, one of them made the following statement:

The Holodomor is a speculation by the fascist Orange regime of Yushchenko, exploited for the purpose of disuniting the peoples of Russia and Ukraine. Everything that comes from Yushchenko is deceit and provocation. Russia and Ukraine in the Empire!
Below is a translated excerpt from another ESM press release:
Yushchenko blames the communist regime, but communists is what our Russian and Ukrainian grandfathers and great-grandfathers were. They defeated fascism and built an unparalleled Red Empire. To blame them as the masterminds of the Holodomor is to spit in our common past. We will not allow anyone to do that, least of all this son of a bitch Viktor Yushchenko — the murderer of the Ukrainian people (at the rate of one million per year).

The Eurasian Youth Union reserves the right to turn to the Russian God, so that, for insulting our ancestors, he will punish all the enemies of our great country: from Yushchenko and Tymoshenko to Judge Rodionova and other malfeasants squatting in the crevice of the resurgent Russia.
This neo-imperialist borscht of euphoric proclamations and esoteric invocations, especially the last one, clearly merits a psychiatric evaluation. After all, rebranding the ESM to DSM would do that organization justice.

Eurasian Extremists Hack President Yushchenko’s Official Website

The Eurasian Youth Union (ESM) has taken responsibility for what it says was retaliation for a Ukrainian attack on its site. (Full story available in Ukrainian at Ukrayinska Pravda.)

While the ESM site shows no signs of downloading, President Yushchenko’s site, with luck, takes about five minutes to download.

The “heroes of Hoverla” have also threatened to bring down the site of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

Leontyev’s Paradox

Mikhail Leontyev, the voice of the Kremlin, the premier Ukrainophobe on Russian TV, and a guest speaker at Savik Shuster’s Svoboda talk show:

Today, when making a decision on NATO, you should have awareness, you should think of who you’re going to shoot at. It’s a very serious question. And if you feel like shooting at the Russians, well, it’s your decision, guys. Shoot, you crazy brothers. You understand, don't you? But this question is a very serious one. And that Ukraine, if she assumes [NATO] obligations, will be the first to be forced — as Russia was forced in all her historical alliances to fight until the last Russian — to shed blood raises no doubts. But whether the Americans will guarantee Ukraine’s security is a very big question in this situation. Will they be able and willing to? And where and how the Ukrainians are going to shed their blood for an ill-defined alliance with their historical enemies, as a matter fact, right? That’s...that's the way it is. Now you decide, guys.

If you love us that much, why don’t you just let go of us? Why don't you let us decide? The passion with which you patronize Ukraine can fire up Patriot missiles! If you want more proof, send us more of those ESM boyscouts.

Taking a Few Shots at Imported Racism in Ukraine

Skinhead, speaking in Russian: Let’s take a straight look at whom we have in our country…uh…uh…at who comes to our country. This is not America, where they have Arabs coming, professors, scientists, medics and so on. What we have coming to us is the regular kind of trash. They come, and then we start thinking why we have so much AIDS and so on. That’s the guys who spread it: those Georgians, those Negroes. They create no value. That’s what we’re fighting against. There’s this phrase that we skinheads do what the police fails to do.

Minister of the Interior, Yuriy Lutsenko, speaking in Ukrainian: Often, these are regular street robberies and assaults. But I have to admit that today, in Ukraine, and in Kyiv specifically, there are large racist teenage groups. In our two months of work this year, we found more than 500 members of the skinhead movement in Kyiv alone.

Most of the blame for not doing enough to combat hate crime lies with law enforcement.

Yet much of the blame also lies with the media for lack of awareness-raising efforts. The Ukrainian media often under-investigate hate crime, viewing it strictly through a social prism, without properly examining its cultural undercurrents and organizational structure.

Russian Nationalism v Ukrainian Nationalism
In many cases, if not in most, perpetrators of hate crime draw inspiration from Russian-influenced nationalism and extremism. The rule of thumb is that Ukrainian nationalists define themselves by opposition to Russian neo-imperialism. Therefore, when portraying hate crime in Ukraine, care should be taken to distinguish Russian nationalism from Ukrainian nationalism.

However, using language as a cue may not always work when it comes to more sophisticated organizations — the new wave of imported racism. Once in Ukraine, these racist organizations mask themselves as “Ukrainian.”

Here’s how their “Ukrainization” works. First, they steep themselves in Ukrainian nationalist slogans. And then, the trick comes. Instead of taking on the Kremlin, they redirect the anger of their Ukrainian converts/partners at Africans, Asians, and former Soviet republic nationals.

This retargeting technique unleashes an array of lethal isms against them: white supremacism,
Moscowcentric pan-Slavism, neo-imperialism, monarchism and neo-Nazism. (All of this in a country that lost more lives to Nazism than any Western country.)

Until recent years, violence against non-Slav immigrants could be traced to a number of isolated incidents. It was with the arrival of imported ideology that hate crime climbed to a statistically significant level in Ukraine.

If you study these organizations’ frontline messages, you almost start feeling as if Stalin, Russification and Russian neo-imperialism never existed in the first place. (These issues traditionally — and legitimately — make the top of the list in the vocal but rarely violent Ukrainian nationalist community.)

Now, if you do a little thinking, you start realizing which way the wind is blowing.

What’s in a Name?
Vestiges of such infiltrative retargeting can be publicly observed. In their expansion strategies, some organizations prefer to Ukrainize without completely erasing their non-Ukrainian identity.

Take UDPNI (Ukrainskoye Dvizheniye Protiv Nelegalnoi Immigratsii), or the Ukrainian Movement Against Illegal Immigration. UDPNI makes no effort to conceal its striking brand-name similarity to DPNI (Dvizheniye Protiv Nelegalnoi Immigratsii), its putative Russian mother ship.

Below are some non-standard Cyrillic brand extensions of those acronyms:

NDPNI (Rus. Narodnoye Dvizheniye Protiv Nelegalonoi Immigratsii)

NRPNI (Ukr. Narodny Rukh Proty Nelegalnoyi Imigratsiyi)

Here's another one, the Ukrainian Eurasian Movement, a local affiliate of the Moscow-based Eurasian Youth Movement (ESM).

Patriot Ukrayiny, which positions itself as a "social nationalist" party, pretty much resembles Russian-based national socialist organizations. Alas, Patriot Ukrayiny almost has no quarrel with Russian neo-imperialism. Instead, the organization specializes in issues of race and illegal immigration.

In a country that will host Euro 2012, it is this kind of ideological “immigration” that must be made illegal. Ukrainian law enforcement must stop turning a blind eye to hate crime and must act vigorously, setting an example for our neighbors to follow.
