Shufrych: “¡NATO NO PASARÁN!”

More on NATO. MP Nestor Shufrych, PRU, former Minister of Emergency Management, speaking at an anti-NATO rally outside the Verkhovna Rada:

Let us recall the words of the revolutionaries who were stopping fascism. They said: "¡No pasarán! They shall not pass.” Today, we say: NATO shall not pass!

What about Spain’s NATO membership? Either Franco still rules Spain, or Shufrych got his rhetoric wrong.

In fact, it wasn’t until 1982, when the transition to democracy reached an advanced stage, that Spain became a NATO member.

Russian, Spanish - but no Ukrainian in Ukraine?

Why is this guy screaming?

Now he's a "revolutionary" by being opposed to NATO?

Seems to me it's more of the same old sovok attitude - "whatever it is, we're against it."

Perfect example of the following "Для того, щоб українці знали правду про НАТО, треба щоб ''януковичі'' менше про нього брехали"
http://blogs.pravda.com.ua/authors
/medvedev/47999ce32df14

'for ukrainians to know the truth about NATO it is needed for the "yanukovych people" to lie less about it.'

And I would add - for Ukrainians to know the truth about NATO it is necessary to kick over the traces of the lies of the 'yanukovych people', not just to the world but also to the Ukrainian people. And there is a media stranglehold (an ex. of which is two major tv channels under foreign power control)which does alot of damage on issues like NATO.

OK, Taras, a little bit of Americana for you.

Charlie Spivak - Big Band trumpet player, born Kyiv, Ukraine.

Luida, I can’t agree more. It’s all about information.

Elmer, somebody made a joke about Shufrych being a walking emergency. Well, you can see for yourself.

Thank you for introducing me to the wonderful music of Charlie Spivak! The name rang a bell, but I didn’t come across his recordings until you showed me. (I have some Glenn Miller songs on my PC, though.)

Yep, it’s amazing how some Ukrainians, upon being implanted into a different culture at a tender age, would grow up and make such a difference in that culture. I think the credit should go to the parents, who pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps and provided their kids with the nurturing environment to make it to the top.

They lived out the American Dream through their kids.

Again, thank you for expanding my horizons!:)

Taras, Charlie Spivak was a very BIG NAME in Big Band music, which I happen to like, along with most other types of music, such as opera, etc.

The full video clip of the song "Dreamsville, Ohio" is not, of course, Charlie Spivak, it was just to give an idea of the full version of the song.

The way it's done on the video is a bit sappy (again, it's not Charlie Spivak), but when they stayed away from the sappiness, the Big Bands sure could play.

Some time, if you have time, you ought to get on YouTube and find The Rhythm Boys. Bing Crosby, in his very young days, was one of the Rhythm Boys, and man, were they talented. You might get a kick out of them.

Ella Fitzgerald, when she was young - what a voice.

Jo Stafford, also. There were others.

It’s a shame I haven’t discovered Charlie Spivak before, especially considering his Ukrainian origin.

I just found a few recordings by The Rhythm Boys on YouTube, plus lots of other great music spanning the first half the 20th century — names I haven’t heard before. So, with a little help from you, I’m now a little more well-rounded musically:)

I have a few Bing Crosby songs: “Deck the Halls,” “Do You Hear What I Hear,” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” (sung by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole). I also have smash hits by Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Doris Day, Gene Autry, Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin.

And of course, I do have some fantastic Ella Fitzgerald songs. My favorite one is “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair.”:)))

Taras, you know Spanish.

So you might like these songs by Linda Ronstadt.

I've provided only one link, but you can easily get to the others from just the one link.

And even if you don't know the words - I think it's pretty good music.

"Desperado" is one of her best songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe2jQbvBDSs

So is "Blue Bayou," which is an old Hank Williams "country" song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f78bKXzALXo

The Bayou is Louisiana country.

It's not quite swamp - but it's pretty wet.

"Save a nickel, save a dime,
workin' till the sun don't shine
lookin' forward to happier times
on Blue Bayou"

"well I'll never be blue
my dreams come true
on Blue Bayou"

OK, see if you can recognize something remotely Ukrainian at the end of this song.

OK, Taras, back to Spanish.

"If you can dance, you can rule the world"

And Ukrainians sure can dance!!!!

Richie Valens was a Mexican immigrant who, in the 1950's, made "La Bamba" into a number one hit rock song.

Here is Linda Ronstadt again, with the same song:

I don't mean to hog this, but...

Here's a singer who sang with Charlie Spivak.

In this video, she is with the Dorsey Big Band - Lynn Roberts.

Thanks for all the links, Elmer!

I used to speak some Spanish, but that was a long time ago, when I was in college. I love “La Bamba” by Los Lobos.

Yep, those final chords sound like a Hutsul dance:)
