Yanukovych: From this treebune...tribune, I want to reach out to every Ukrainian with this: No more complaining and humiliating yourself. Ukraine is a strong and ambitchious state. It’s time to show some Ukrainian character — to prove to yourself and to the world that Ukraine is a country that leads the way.

As if saying трибина instead of трибуна wasn’t enough!

Ambitchious would be a mistranslation. What he actually mumbled out defied translation: амбідна — a portmanteau of ambitna and bidna (ambitious and poor).

How badly does he want poor Ukraine to show some Ukrainian character? I mean, like they did in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya?

Or at least, like holding him to his promise? Last year, he promised us to show his Mezhyhirya property, remember?

Pools, lakes, mansions, club houses, guest houses, pigeon houses, bowling, tennis, golf, helipad, underground shooting range...





Just how much character does it take? To keep all this stuff around while holding the country's highest office?

BBC Corners Yanukovych on Roads and Taxes

He puts the people first. Or does he?

Do some research on how many roads were reconstructed and built last year and how many this year. Not that it makes me tick, but I’ll tell you at least twice as many. Do it. It’s official data. That’s first of all. Second of all, undoubtedly, from the highways we should move on to roads of...sec...secondary importance, ones that are used by...those [ordinary] people...uh...and...these roads...should be...put in order as well. The problem did not arise overnight. It’s...uh...what we inherited from our predecessors. Check out the stats. Do you believe the stats or not? Take a look at what was done during the [last] five years by our predecessors in any given area. Take any indicator. You’ll see that it all went like this. Downhill. Why? Try answering this question. Just be honest. Unbiased. Yes, that goes for you too. I would like to have journalists tell the truth. I really would like to. Now that will be freedom of speech. So I’m telling you: Year after year...there will be increases in the volume of roads being built, road reconstruction and road quality. This issue has been set forth harshly, and it will be implemented.

Did you hear that? Yeah, it’s him! It’s the “Ukraine for the People”-“I hear everyone”- “red-hot iron” man speaking.

You may remember him serving as PM (August 2006 through December 2007).

Now that he’s been promoted...



...how about we ask him a couple of questions?

Why did he spend 50 million tax hryvnias on his Mezhyhirya home-sweet-home road?

Let me guess. Euro 2012 made him do it!



At least, that’s the official explanation supplied by Ukravtodor, the state-run ($15M/km ‘08) road construction company.

And what about those rural roads and the low-caste aborigines that use them? They can wait. The Millennium Development Goals told him so, right?

Forget the Yanukovych-only road. Try the Mezhyhirya one! There’s room for everyone now. What’s good for Yanukovych is good for Ukraine!

Still mad at him for blocking traffic as he passes by? Wait until he goes airborne!

Yanukovych Does Deutschland! (Again)

Every time he visits Germany, he brings a little Oktoberfest with him.

Serhiy Leshchenko of Ukrayinska Pravda posts four audios that capture the dramedy of Yanukovych’s recent voyage to Germany.

1. Refers to himself as a “scientist” who “was creating this science.”

ProFFessor Yanukovych: I worked with investments as a manager at various levels at one time and as a scientist: I was creating this science and running...running a faculty at the university for 8 years.

2. Recalls German workers who did a great job coating a “club house” at Mezhyhirya, in a rare admission of what his €23K salary can buy.



Uses the word “обналічка” (surzhyk for cashing) instead of облицювання or оздоблення (coating), as suggested by someone.


3. Teaches “Romano Prodi of Ireland” a geography lesson.




4. Tells a Soviet-themed joke that lacks a shred of humor to it.

Make a Promise, Break a Promise (Yes, He Can — All in 1 Day!)

With a few dozen protesters sealed behind a massive police cordon, the 100 Days of Yanucracy gala went without much incident.

Until Yanukovych spoke to the reporters, that is.

Audaciously, they cornered him on his campaign promise to let them tour his fantabulous Mezhyhirya principality.

Caught up in a non-cherry-picked environment, Yanukovych unleashed the full force of the kick-the-cat syndrome on Herman, his big-mouth helicopter mom.

Her attempts to mother him from that environment only made things worse. To every reporter that surrounded him, he promised the bus ride of a lifetime: 5 buses x 60 people in each. Destination: Mezhyhirya.

And boy did he take them for a ride!

Yanukovych: Hanna Mykhailivna...[starts looking around for her]...have this organized. How...how...how many?
Herman [keeps blabbering]:

Yanukovych [gets angry]: No, wa...wait, listen, just listen to me, just listen to me please!
Herman [stops blabbering]:

Yanukovych: How many? 50? A bus? Two? Three? Have five buses organized. I have no objections, no objections. Five buses. 60 people in each.
Herman: As you wish.

Yanukovych: But...but...bu...
Herman: We don’t let the president down around here.

Yanukovych [gets angry again]: Just...lis...Hanya, just let me do the talking! Yes. Just keep in mind that I’ve got one and a half hectares down there, of which I’m an owner. The rest is prohibited...no trespassing. One and a half, one and a half hectares of my property. It is to this one and a half hectares that I’m inviting you. You’ll be walking, you’ll be working. I’m o...open.

Reporters [ask him about who owns the rest]:
Yanukovych: Eh? There’s an owner.

Reporters: Who?
Yanukovych: You know everything [reporters burst into laughter].

Reporters: Your relatives?
Yanukovych: He knows more...more...

Reporters: A London-based firm...
Yanukovych: ...more than I do! Maybe those are your relatives? I don’t know. [laughter] Most probably, yours. What do you mean ‘why’?

Herman: OK, Viktor Fedorovych, we’ll have this organized [phony as hell].
Yanukovych: Eh? I don’t know [responds to a question].

Herman: Thank you!

No sooner had Yanukovych promised to, well, keep his campaign promise than Herman canceled it.

She said the president had an important international meeting to attend. Half an hour later, he made his way back to Mezhyhirya.

And guess what? That’s where the meeting was supposed to take place, according to Herman.

I look forward to having them both appear in Lie To Me, Season 3.

You don’t mess with a lawmaker like him.

Name: Oleksandr Feldman. Net worth: $266.5M.

Tymoshenko booted him from chairmanship of the Kharkiv BYuT chapter. And look how he got his groove back.

He dumped Tymoshenko and joined the Coalition of Carcasses.



His other consolation prize: a rare Harley Davidson, a 50th anniversary birthday gift from his son, 24.

Asked about the price, he said his son, already a father, doesn’t maintain separate finances.

Will the Mezhyhirya Man let him use that special highway?

Tears for Votes: Yanukovych Follows Lytvyn

Some laugh and sing. Others cry and cry.

Whether spontaneous or staged, tears put a human face on a politician. The Hillary syndrome has now spread to Ukraine. Tears have been shed in our presidential campaign.

Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn routinely blasts the oligarchs and claims being cash-strapped.

That’s despite privatizing 600 sq m of taxpayer-paid real estate and having a daughter who owns a luxury boutique and a brand new $100K car.

You’d think that makes him a thick-skinned materialist. Hell no!

When a fellow Lytvynite presented him with a rushnyk sewn by her mother, the gift moved the man to tears.

Presidential candidate Volodmyr Lytvyn: In...[fights back tears, falls short of igniting a standing ovation]...in Polissya...in a back-of-beyond Polissya village...[fights back tears, ignites a full-blown standing ovation]...my parents brought me into this world.

Yanukovych found himself in a similar situation during his tour of western Ukraine, where his opponents vastly outnumber his supporters.

An elderly woman mounts the stage, empathizes with Yanukovych’s childhood of growing up without a mother, gives him a vyshyvanka and wishes him the best.

Presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych: [smiles amid applause, crosses himself, bows repeatedly, thanks the woman, kisses her hands, ignites a standing ovation]: Thanks a lot, Hanna Mykhailivna! I’m deeply moved. I’m very grateful. In the area, in the region, in the land where I grew up, there’s a hu...huge industry. It was there...that I grew up, it was there that I was taught to work, to manage production, the economy. I grew up all by myself among people. Indeed, down there...nobody wore vyshyvankas...[gets sentimental]...and I’ve never worn it in my life. But I...I promise you that I will definitely wear it on holidays. [ignites a standing ovation, steps down, visibly tearful]

It’s the same tough guy who sells his apartment for Hr. 33,416,350 but reports Hr. 2,674,910 on his tax returns.

If you have a problem with that, you can sue him. So he says.

How does Tymoshenko debate with a shy guy like this?

Presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych: I wasn’t trained as an artist. Therefore, compe-competing...with Tymoshenko...uh...in this profession is something I won’t do. As a matter of principle. It’s not my profession.

Yes, it is. Always has been, always will be. You’re both artists. She just happens to be a better one.

She says her hubby runs a small business, yet she doesn’t even know the company’s name. When she comes home, he’s already asleep. When she goes to work, he’s still asleep. You know the story.

Now what’s your story?

On your tax returns, you say you sold a 140 sqm Kyiv apartment for Hr. 2,674,910 in 2008 — to buy that Mezhyhirya property (339 acres).

But the sales agreement says you actually sold a 384 sqm apartment — for Hr. 33,416,350 (about $7M in ‘08) — to MP Serhiy Klyuyev, a fellow Regionalist.

Moreover, it says you had obtained that apartment as a gift.

Tymoshenko Tigers Up Presidential Campaign

The presidency becomes her. Stunt by stunt.

Last Wedenesday, she renationalized Yanukovych’s Mezhyhirya residence — a 137 hectare (339 acre) property privatized in a shadowy scheme with Yushchenko’s help.

This royal gift had remained a non-negotiable until her grand coalition talks with Yanukovych collapsed, wiping the slate clean.

She wants to be clean again. Her frenemy will be a dirty word as she struggles to position herself back into the jungle of her voters’ hearts.

PM Yulia Tymoshenko: Well, it’s understood that the coming year of 2010 is the year of the white tiger. Therefore, I understand this gift is a certain mascot for the coming year of 2010. And I can say it firmly that I already dream of taking him somewhere to talks, especially when he grows up a little bit [giggles].

Host: A special gift!

Tymoshenko: I think...I think he’ll say everything convincingly. I also think he can be appointed...adviser to the PM on combat...[giggles] Judging by his appearance, he likes it [giggles] but I think that such little gifts [giggles] can really be a lucky mascot for the year 2010. I want to thank you, and I think that the year [says год in Russian]...the year [quickly corrects herself with рік in Ukrainian] of the white tiger will be a successful one for Ukraine and for every one of you.

Whey not gift her with a salamander? Or with a flock of silent lambs?

Oh, by the way, she had a cargo plane named after her.

No King Left Behind (Without a Castle)

If you don’t believe in affordable housing, this story of success will ruin your skepticism.

Ukrayinska Pravda has a tapestry of fantastic quotes from Yanukovych’s recent interview on the BBC’s Ukrainian Service. Among other things, the interview zeroed in on the state residence at Mezhyhirya, the humble abode built with taxpayers’ money, which Yanukovych intends to keep.

On this estate, there's a small patch of land, about half a hectare, on which there's a house of 250 square meters, no more than that. I’ve lived in this house since 2006, ever since President Yushchenko signed the related decree into law.

That’s one hell of a humble abode, and a mighty generous decree!


Once the house was granted to me by the decree, I, in cooperation with the State Affairs Directorate, renovated it to make it suitable for habitation. I invested my money in it.

What “money” did you invest in it, given your public income statement of 38,036.89 hryvnias ($7,532) for the year 2005?


After Mezhyhirya was privatized by this firm — I don’t recall their name — I signed a rental agreement with them.

What a selective amnesia case. But wait a minute, you mean Tetyana Chornovil’s story was actually not-so-unfounded? What a relief for her!


Initially, I was bargaining for the opportunity to buy out this property. They quoted a price that I — let’s just say — couldn’t agree with. They promised to perform an independent valuation, and I offered them to contact my lawyer, but they still haven’t provided me with the findings of this evaluation.

You don’t remember the asking price either, right?


And I stick around. That's not exactly what I want, as is all the talk surrounding this, as is the rent — I pay 11,000 hryvnias a month. But it so happened that I’ve lived on this estate since 1999 or 2000. My grand son grew up here. I occupy this house on legal grounds.

$2,200 a month for a 250 sq m mansion? You’re a lucky guy! In Kyiv, people shell out $500-600 a month for a no-frills single-room apartment. Even if "their" asking price for the house was a little too rich for your blood, the rent you pay sounds like the best deal in town!


Nobody was interested in this estate. Huge government funds were spent on its maintenance and security. It wasn’t cost-efficient. My opinion on such issues: Decisions have to be made. We should keep a small number of state residences. As for the remaining dachas, we shouldn’t have them. They should be sold, privatized. That will be cost-efficient.

Yeah, it breaks my heart when I think of all the rusty-dusty state residences sitting idle across the country, waiting to be privatized. They’re such a liability for the public. I wish we had more people like you, who have the guts to cut the costs of government in Ukraine.

Here’s a clear-cut case for cost-efficiency. In the name of stability and prosperity, may every public official be allowed to privatize his or her state residence at a discount price. Just name it and claim it!
