What good is democracy without 360 degree feedback?
It takes balls to play snowballs with the state, considering how it can always play nightsticks with you.
Maybe that little opposition rally did get its point across after all?
While some not-so-opposition MPs sucked it up, Tymoshenko strongly opposes such non-violent snowball protests. In a country where MPs, officials and cops beat, mutilate and kill people on a regular basis, isn't it a bit too much to ask?
Obviously, not for the Tymoshenko part of the establishment. Wait, wasn't it Tymoshenko's top brass and then-Interior Minister Lutsenko that defended — and even wanted to award — MP Lozynsky? Until it became clear that, contrary to earlier reports, this guy — one of their guys — had hunted and killed an innocent villager?
Maybe they all like democracy? But not if democracy doesn't like them back?

Ruling PoR MPs Pelted With Snowballs At Opposition Rally

Yanukovych Scared, Tymoshenko Stoic as Protests Continue
Just to be clear: It's anti-Yanukovych protests, not pro-Tymoshenko ones.
Chernobyl vet: Screw them, screw them…they’re sitting up there and torturing these people, these Chernobyl folks. The Chernobyl folks were all there, no...nobody ran away from there, and those bastards up there are hiding their asses. [mumbled fragment] They’ve shipped their kids abroad. How long can they mistreat us like that? Yanukovych, come the fuck out, bitch!
He hears everyone.
Yanukovych: …and I’m being informed by law enforcement that…weapons are being procured inside the country…and an effort is under way to attack authorities. [ …] Already, people have lost everything: both fear and shame. So who’s organizing this? [ …] Not those who are struggling the most. Those who are struggling the most, they remain silent, patient and waiting.
No offense (or should we say no fence?), but do you see anyone waiting here?
Well, there’s one lady who’s waiting.
Tymoshenko: Hold on!
She's not working, but she's definitely Ukraine now.

Afghan Vets Almost Storm Parliament Over Pension Cuts
Their war isn't over.
The government will mostly likely back down. No government can afford protesters with combat experience.
Not even the world's 134th transparent government (out of 178).
The government that puts Ukrainians out of their misery.

Drunk MP Yanukovych Jr. Can't Find Way Home
"I'll make it on my own!"
That's what he told his buddies after hitting a couple of wrong doors.
Trashing wildlife in Western Ukraine can be that stressful for a lawmaker.
Yanukovych: Let me...assure you: I am not ashamed of my kids and my grandkids, and I want your children to be no different...from mine...and I want them to be happy. But when kids get dragged...uh...into this mud that you're trying to drag my kids, my family, into...
Father knows best.

Pro-Yanukovych Lawmakers Play With iPads, iPhones
Jokes, tabloids, cars... Keeping up with the Tymoshenkos can be fun!

Lawmakers in Ukraine make more in a month than the average Ukrainian does in a year: $4K.
Even so, what many of them make officially doesn’t quite add up to their lifestyles.

Video of the day: Luhansk city council member Roman Landik beating up a 20-year-old woman (a softcore model, as it later turned out).
That’s the same guy who poses with Yanukovych, Lytvyn, Tihipko & Co plus other celebs on odnoklassniki.ru (classmates).
The crown jewel of his collection: a semi-erased “One
law for all” NUNS/Yushchenko ‘07 campaign billboard with “For sale” on it.

Topless FEMEN v. Yanukovych-'Bulls'-Get-Everything Pension Reform
Fools get the casket, bulls get the cash.
Looks like FEMEN got a kick out of it. And so did the cops.
If only they could move as fast as Yanukovych.

Fenced Crowds, Sand Storm as Yanukovych Visits Uzhhorod
Ukraine for the people? Tell it to the fenced up people.
Yanukovych: If...he doesn’t speed up…uh…the speed…I’ll be forcing him to...even physically...
Fenced folks [laughing]: No, no, no!
Yanukovych: ...so that he’ll be running faster.
Folks: He’s good!
Yanukovych: Huh? We come from different weight classes, so I understand this.
So he knows how to kick ass. And sand too.
Now that beats Kseniya Simonova's sand animation, doesn't it?
Back in Kyiv they're into erotic asphyxiation.

Police Thwart Protests, Scrap Russian Orthodox Tent Church
OMG! What a way to treat state religion!
On May 14 (Day of Anger), scores of anti-government protesters tried to camp outside parliament — only to be detained by police and later released.
Business as usual, huh? Not exactly.
It turns out police also dismantled that Russian Orthodox tent church that had been there since 2005. Yeah, since the Orange Revolution, for Christ’s sake! Now that should grab Patriarch Kirill’s attention!
Or maybe he had secretly blessed the whole operation? To kind of separate Yanukovych from his favorite church? At least for anyone willing to buy it. I mean Dura lex, sed lex v. Cuius regio, eius religio.
Who knows, maybe this little trick will help Patriarch Kirill save on travel and pack bigger crowds in Ukraine. Without resorting to Photoshop.
Original
Hocus-pocus...
Hallelujah!

Not in Ukraine? Let Your Pal Vote for You!
Every time you leave, leave your card in good hands.
That’s the house rule. From coalition to opposition, everybody “plays the piano.”
For all the talk of a foolproof system, the Mar. 17 proposition didn’t pass, falling short by 4 votes. Fingerprint recognition? Why bite the hand that feeds you?
STB names and shames the latest card rentals: MPs Maksym Lutsky and Iryna Berezhna of the ruling Party of Regions. The two went to the Council of Europe and guess what? Their cards back home voted 6 and 4 times respectively, the record shows.
Reporter: How’s your card doing now?
MP Lutsky: It’s not.
MP Berezhna: My MP card is in Kyiv, but it’s not voting.
If only I had veto power...I’d vote for Berezhna as Yanukovych’s spokeswoman! Not only would she be a better match, but she would also be able to match her biorhythms to that of her boss.
I mean, showing up late for work wouldn’t be a problem.

Yanukovych Slams Corruption, Foreign ‘Hirelings’ (Opposition Only)
There’s no place like Mezhyhirya...and no corruption like the opposition.
Yanukovych: The 20 years of the existence...of the post-Soviet system, an unknown model, a so-called transition one, laid the foundation for global corruption...in the state. At all levels. [long pause] And when such a strong crushing blow is dealt...to the bureaucratic system, it certainly reacts...with equal force. That’s why today we...see bureaucracy, corruption in Ukraine being covered up with democratic slogans. They’re lying brazenly, twisting the facts...with stolen money, they’re hiring hirelings — in Europe, in America, inside the country [long pause] — ones who rewrite everything they’re...given — that this bureaucracy and this corruption gives them. And they’re disorienting both the world and Ukrainian society.
Mr. President, you look so hot wearing those glasses. They must have gone all steamy from all that hot air.
Please accept this friendly gift from Poland, for free rides across your Mezhyhirya property, the most pristine and uncorrupt place on earth.
And if you need a few extra votes/bucks, you just let your son/IMF know.
One man, three votes.
You play, we pay!

4 Opposition MPs in Hospital, Beaten by Majority
Blood on the dance floor again!

Casualties: 4 BYuTies hospitalized with various injuries (1 in pretty bad shape).

Small business, small protest.
It takes 20 times as many protesters to mean business.

Over 100 Protest Bill Abridging Freedom of Assembly
Using their bodies as letters, over 100 activists said ТАК (yes) to freedom of assembly and НІ (no) to legislation meant to restrict it.
The proposed bill would require protesters to post a 4-day notice prior to holding a protest.
Hundreds rallied against the bill Monday in major cities across Ukraine.
They named the rally “Вихід з демократії. Пароль: 2450.” (“Exiting Democracy. Password: 2450.”), referring to the bill’s registration number.
In Kyiv, the rally proceeded from Maidan Nezalezhnosti to the Verkhovna Rada and ended with the announcement that hearings will be postponed until next week.
If you’re a fan of FEMEN, stay tuned.
At a small but vocal rally, Sasha and Inna, the two vinok-clad ladies, protested passionately and often stole the spotlight. (Just as they did last Friday on Inter.)

Harley Davidson and the Mezhyhirya Man
You don’t mess with a lawmaker like him.
Name: Oleksandr Feldman. Net worth: $266.5M.
Tymoshenko booted him from chairmanship of the Kharkiv BYuT chapter. And look how he got his groove back.
He dumped Tymoshenko and joined the Coalition of Carcasses.
His other consolation prize: a rare Harley Davidson, a 50th anniversary birthday gift from his son, 24.
Asked about the price, he said his son, already a father, doesn’t maintain separate finances.
Will the Mezhyhirya Man let him use that special highway?

Yanukovych Fans Wax Poetic
Ukraine’s got talent!
Woman: We’re now protecting the Verkhovna Rada, the rightful government elected by the people, and we won’t let...Maybe the Japanese and Koreans are one whole too?
Man [in surzhyk]: We love Yanukovych — always have, always will!
Yanukoveech, you’re my pride.
I am always by your side!
Woman: And no one will sever our ties to the Russian people. We are one whole: Ukrainians and Russians. And no one... And they’re against the Russians! They’re for America!
Man: They’re selling out Ukraine!

Opposition Vet Slams Today’s Underperformers
Stepan Khmara, 72, comes from the old school of opposition.
His opposition took him through seven years of political imprisonment in the ‘80s and three consecutive parliamentary terms in 1990-2002.
In remarks below, he reflects on the opposition’s handling of the gas-for-fleet ratification process.
Stepan Khmara: When I saw this picture of them standing...uh...by the flags, I knew pretty well that...uh...the meeting wouldn’t be...uh...disrupted. Because if you want to do it, we really did it — and quite a few times. And they had to unfold that flag, hold hands, pose before the cameras and so on. They weren’t thinking about the result. They needed the picture. That’s why it was an ugly scene for me to see.
I kind of agree with his assessment. The make-some-noise technique goes only so far.

Parliament Ratifies Gas-for-Fleet Pact As Thousands Protest
Rihanna picked the wrong country for her “Umbrella” video.
Eggs, smoke grenades flew in the Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday as the umbrella-covered majority ratified the Medvedev-Yanukovych Pact.
The unconstitutional treaty that gives Ukraine’s oligarchs gas discounts and extends the presence of Russia's Black Sea Fleet until 2042 gathered 236 votes.
That included absentee MPs Kivalov and Holovaty, members of the ruling Party of Regions.
Outside, thousands of people rallied against the treaty and wrestled with police.
Amid the struggle and mayhem inside, opposition leaders failed to communicate with the protesters outside. In the absence of live coverage, the protesters relied on cell phones and portable radios.
Thus, the protesters on the ground found themselves a little out of touch with the ones on the Rada floor.
Tymoshenko, Yatsenyuk, Hrytsenko, Lutsenko... From my side of the rally, none of them was seen or heard.
I, for one, did a lot of fence-sitting.
